The happiness movement is dying, and I say it’s about time.
9-11 ushered us fearfully into a brave new world. The great recession caused us to question even the most fundamental rules of economics, not to mention the rules by which we live our lives.
Our reaction was to sit back and take solace. Smell the roses. Forgo that promotion in favor of family. Practice Zen Habits, and search for some kind of inner peace.
Now, I am a big proponent of perspective. The last chapter of my book, The Leap is all about defining the life that you want to live, and it is the single piece of writing that I am proud of most.
But it’s time to wake up. It’s time to stop whining and avoiding what life has in store for you. It’s time to get busy and make something happen.
Sure, simplifying your life can bring a sense of order and confidence. But true fulfillment does not come from avoiding challenges out of fear that we might not succeed. Fulfillment comes from succeeding when the odds were against us. It comes in the face of others doubting our potential. In those moments when we doubted OUR OWN potential, true fulfillment comes from proving everyone wrong and coming out on top.
The economy is turning again. Business is moving again. The train is leaving.
Wake up, and get on the damn train.
